Name: Shanna Palans
Organization’s Name: Inspire 70 Coworking, Pinot’s Palette Lake St. Louis, & Wharf Pharmacy
What did you want to be when you were a child?
A Mom! I really had no deep aspirations for any particular type of career. I wasn’t the kid who decided in 2nd grade to be a nurse. But I always thought about having a family.
What called you to your work?
I married a man who had a family business. I really loved being a part of making it successful and being involved in my community. Around business #3 it seems to have gotten out of hand. Hi, I’m Shanna, and I’m a serial entrepreneur…
Who in the community do you look up to? Do you have a role model?
Oh my! I look up to so many women in my community and my life. I come into contact with so many amazing ladies day after day, and would not be who I am today without learning from them professionally and personally. I think it’s extremely important for women to nurture & support each other. We do that for everyone else in our lives, and I finally feel like I’m getting that in my life. So, I have my Personal Board of Directors that I can rely on for advice, brainstorming, venting and when it’s time for occasional mental-overload-breakdown. Not surprisingly, most of them are in an organization called Little Black Book: Women in Business.
Do you have a personal or professional motto?
“She knew she could, so she did”. This was my mantra the 15 months of ups and downs it took to get Pinot’s Palette open. It’s also why it didn’t take that long to open Inspire 70 Coworking. Now, I know I can do whatever need doing.
Name your greatest success, or what you are most proud of, in your business experiences.
Most proud of: getting Pinot’s open. Greatest success: I truly hope I haven’t had it yet. There is plenty of time for more fun, learning, and growth!
What product/service do you offer?
Pinot’s Palette: instructor-led painting classes, both public and private parties, including corporate events.
Inspire 70 Coworking: shared office space, by-the-hour or month, with conference room rental and educational opportunities.
Wharf Pharmacy: prescription and over-the-counter medications, custom compounding, cards & gifts, delivery service.
What makes your business unique?
Me. You can get your meds filled anywhere, but I hope you choose Wharf Pharmacy because we offer small-town service. You can go to many paint-and-sip-studios, but I hope you choose mine because I make sure my guests have a great time. You can rent an office or conference room lots of places, but I hope you rent mine because you know I will give you the best service. I do everything I can to make sure you have a reason to come and see me again.
What is the nicest thing a customer has ever said to you about your products/service?
I get a lot of compliments and good reviews, just check my Facebook pages. I hate it when I fail my customer, so the best thing you can tell me is that I not only met your expectations, I exceeded them. Go ahead, tell me that and see how happy I am!
What are three things you use every day in your job?
My brain, my heart, and my beer cooler. I’m smart, I care, and I know when it’s time to celebrate a job well done. I’m very European like that.
Tell us about organizations/charities you are passionate about.
One great thing about being a community-involved businesswoman is being able to get to know local charities and support them. I do fundraisers in my business life, and we get offered the opportunity to donate and fundraise for them. Some that we love are Komen, Special Olympics MO, The Child Center, Pride St. Charles, Humane Society, Katee Hessler Foundation, Volunteers in Medicine, 5 Acres Animal Shelter, Toys for Tots, area schools, the list goes on and on.
When you are not working, what do you like to do in your spare time?
Swim, boat, golf, travel, read… just kidding! I’m pretty busy with our businesses right now, but I have grand plans. I do spend my free time with my family, who I am blessed all still live close by. Lucky for me, my husband is also focused on business right now, so we spend our date nights networking, together.
